IHG Hotels & Resorts, a global leader in hospitality, continues to make an impact with nine of its brands introducing in 13 European countries since the beginning of 2024. This remarkable growth spans across all four of its brand segments: Luxury & Lifestyle, Premium, Essentials, and Suites.
As of 2024, IHG has surpassed 1,100 hotels across Europe, including those open and in development. This expansion highlights the confidence of hotel owners in IHG’s offerings and the strong appeal of its brands among travellers. Karin Sheppard, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Europe at IHG, credits this success to a combination of market focus, brand innovation, and robust operational support.
Luxury and Lifestyle Segment
IHG’s six Luxury and Lifestyle brands, including InterContinental, Kimpton, and Vignette Collection, are thriving in Europe. This segment now comprises 12% of IHG’s open European hotels and 27% of its pipeline.
- The Vignette Collection made its debut in Liverpool, UK (The Halyard) and Budapest, Hungary (Verno House). It also plans to enter Greece with The Chania Hotel in Crete.
- Kimpton introduced its first hotel in Hungary with the Kimpton BEM Palace in Budapest and will launch Kimpton La-Mer Resort & Spa in Crete.
- InterContinental has expanded to Serbia with the InterContinental Belgrade. This marks a significant milestone for the brand, which now has over 225 hotels worldwide.
Premium Segment
IHG’s Premium brands, including voco, Crowne Plaza, and the newly acquired Ruby Hotels, have seen dynamic growth. Over 80% of the brand’s new openings in Europe in 2024 were conversions.
- voco entered Sweden with voco Stockholm – Kista and will soon debut in Türkiye with voco Antalya, opening in late 2025.
- Ruby Hotels, recently acquired in 2025, announced its first signings in Copenhagen, Denmark, less than six weeks post-acquisition.
- Crowne Plaza introduced its first property in Montenegro with Crowne Plaza Podgorica.
Essentials Segment
The Essentials brands, including Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and the newly launched Garner Hotels, form the backbone of IHG’s European operations, representing 70% of its expansion.
- Garner Hotels, IHG’s midscale conversion brand, made its debut in Europe in 2024. Notable openings include Preston and Edinburgh in the UK, Hamburg in Germany, and Maastricht in the Netherlands.
- Holiday Inn – the niu, a collaboration with NOVUM Hospitality, now has more than 40 open hotels across Europe, combining unique local designs with Holiday Inn’s global recognition.
Suites Segment
With rising demand for extended stays, IHG’s Suites portfolio continues to grow. The segments include 15 hotels, a 35% increase over its current count.
- Candlewood Suites will celebrate its European debut in 2025, launching 14 hotels in Germany through a partnership with NOVUM Hospitality.
- Staybridge Suites opened its eleventh European property in Malaga, Spain, adding 105 suites to the Urban Sky development.
Looking Ahead
As of December 2024, IHG operates 878 hotels across 39 European countries, with an additional 260 hotels in the pipeline. The UK remains its largest market with 355 hotels, followed by Germany (147), France (71), and Spain (57). This fast-paced growth reflects IHG’s strong market positioning and unwavering commitment to delivering quality hospitality experiences.
