At Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, sustainability isn’t just a one-day event, it’s a way of life. Located in Mae Rim Valley, the resort has spent over 30 years preserving local traditions, including the region’s centuries-old rice farming culture.
By using hand-sown native farming techniques, free from machinery and chemicals, the resort ensures the land remains in its natural state while maintaining soil quality.
“Our resort is built on a deep respect for nature,” says Sean Mosher, General Manager. “We integrate sustainability into everything we do, from guest experiences to our team’s daily activities.” A rice donation programme also ensures that harvests are shared with the local community, reinforcing the resort’s commitment to supporting its surroundings.
Connecting Guests with the Environment
To help guests understand sustainable farming, the resort offers a Rice Planting Activity, where visitors can learn about eco-friendly cultivation methods. This Earth Day, the experience has been expanded to include vegetable planting and in-house fertiliser use, promoting organic growth and reducing reliance on harmful chemicals.
Dheeraj Singh Patwal, Health and Wellness Manager, explains: “By engaging with the earth, guests can gain a deeper appreciation for sustainable food production and the importance of protecting our environment.”
Mindful Movement in Nature
For those looking to embrace wellness, guests can take part in a Sunrise Yoga session, designed to ensure mindfulness in nature. The practice helps visitors slow down, reflect, and appreciate the planet’s beauty, supporting Earth Day’s mission of conscious and sustainable living.
A special 15-minute breathwork session further enhances the connection to nature, encouraging guests to reflect on their personal relationship with the environment.
Sustainable Dining: Local and Seasonal
Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai champions locally sourced ingredients, ensuring its dining experiences align with sustainability. Executive Chef Alvin Dela Cruz has introduced a Zero Carbon Footprint Set Dinner, featuring produce from the resort’s own gardens.
“This menu highlights the importance of supporting local farmers and organic produce, helping reduce the environmental impact of large-scale food production and transport,” he says. The thoughtfully crafted three-course meal showcases food grown with minimal environmental impact, reinforcing Earth Day’s message of reducing pollution and waste through mindful consumption.
Sustainability as a Way of Life
The resort’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond guest experiences. Eco-conscious initiatives, such as No-Bin Day, mindful consumption, and waste reduction programmes, encourage staff to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives.
“These small actions create a lasting impact, promoting a culture of sustainability that goes beyond Earth Day,” Mosher explains. “It empowers our team to make healthier, more environmentally conscious choices, both at work and at home.”
With its holistic approach to sustainability, Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai continues to set a standard for responsible hospitality, ensuring that guests and staff play a meaningful role in protecting the planet.
