IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the signing of Regent Karuizawa, a 58-key luxury onsen retreat set to open in 2028, marking the Regent brand’s first resort location in Japan. Nestled in the historic mountain town of Karuizawa, the new property will offer a refined sanctuary for global travellers seeking tranquility, cultural immersion, and elevated hospitality.
A New Benchmark in Mountain Luxury
Designed by acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma, Regent Karuizawa will be surrounded by lush forests, natural hot springs, and panoramic views of Mount Asama. The resort will feature:
- A mix of rooms and private villas
- A signature spa and onsen
- A specialty restaurant with valley views
- Meeting spaces, a gym, and curated wellness experiences
“Regent is the perfect brand for this site,” said Abhijay Sandilya, Managing Director, Japan & Micronesia, IHG Hotels & Resorts. “It enables us to create an immersive destination with exploration and luxury.”
Karuizawa: A Rising Star in Japanese Tourism
Located just an hour from Tokyo via Shinkansen, Karuizawa is one of Japan’s most prestigious resort towns, known for its:
- Year-round appeal with skiing, waterfalls, and nature trails
- Upscale shopping and fine dining
- Historic charm, including old streets and cultural landmarks
- Popularity among the Japanese Imperial Family and elite holidaymakers
Inbound travel to Karuizawa has grown 30% since 2019, reflecting its rising status among international travellers. Regent Karuizawa will meet this demand by offering experiential luxury rooted in local culture and natural beauty.
Expanding IHG’s Luxury Footprint in Japan
The new resort complements the upcoming Regent Kyoto, also set to open in 2028, and joins Hotel Indigo Karuizawa in the same region. IHG currently operates 55 hotels across 10 brands in Japan, with 17 more in the pipeline, reinforcing its commitment to luxury and upper-upscale hospitality in both city and resort destinations.
